AECOM Joins Book Donor Program to Introduce Kids to Engineering - December 20, 2011
ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, NJ, Dec. 20—Engineering giant AECOM is the latest in a list of corporate donors to support Trilogy Publications’ Adopt-a-School program. The program helps boost technological literacy and introduces engineering to upper elementary school students through a colorful 28-page book, Those Amazing Engineers. AECOM’s support has provided 1,200 books for 25 schools in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.
AECOM’s president, John Dionisio, is enthusiastic about the program. “It is critical that we, in the engineering profession, take an active part in encouraging the next generation of engineers. Those Amazing Engineers sparks the interest of young people and shows them how engineering touches every aspect of their lives”, says Dionisio. “We encourage engineering firms of all sizes to support engineering education, and the Adopt-a-School Program is an effective way to get involved.”
The Adopt-a-School program matches private donors with schools around the country that have requested free copies of Those Amazing Engineers, and an accompanying teachers guide, for use in their classrooms. Response from teachers has been enthusiastic, with close to 18,000 books requested from more than 200 schools around the country.
Other key donors to the Adopt-a-School program include such industry leaders as Thornton Tomasetti, Halcrow, URS, Schiavone Construction and Michael Baker Engineering. With more than 70,000 copies in print, Those Amazing Engineers has received outstanding reviews and has been applauded by educators, as well as the engineering community, where it serves as a vital part of outreach programs for corporations, organizations and universities.
